School breakfast is for the Birds - Philadelphia Eagles, that is!
Champions of school breakfast at Colonial Elementary School got to meet with some champions of football at Lincoln Financial Field on Sept. 25, as part of a celebration for schools who finished in the top 10 across the state for the Governor’s School Breakfast Challenge.
This is the second year in a row that CES has received a designation as a Governor’s Breakfast Champion. Recognition took place at Lincoln Financial Field, which is home to the Philadelphia Eagles football team (and reigning Superbowl champs). During their visit, CES students and members of the school Food Service team had the opportunity to tour the stadium, eat breakfast prepared by Eagles stadium chefs, and meet with Swoop (Eagles mascot), Eagles cheerleaders, and former wide receiver, Jason Avant.
To become a Breakfast Champion, schools must increase participation in universal free breakfast. Colonial Elementary School fed almost half of its enrolled students breakfast during the challenge period last year, which is a significant accomplishment, according to Lori McCoy, Director of Food and Nutrition Services.
“The Food Service workers made breakfast fun by providing give-aways through Lucky Tray Day, and by offering a variety of items,” she said. “Principals encouraged breakfast during announcements and offered flexibility as to where meals could be eaten.”
In addition to increasing student participation in breakfast, schools had to demonstrate how they expanded access through innovative service, what types of hot, nutritious morning meals were available, and show how they have prioritized locally-sourced and lower-sugar foods.
CES Food Service workers Christine Troutman, Ray Mikalonis, Anne Haasis, and Tariq Benn attended the trip to the Linc, along with Mrs. McCoy, Superintendent Dr. Michael Christian, CES Assistant Principal Michael Tauber, and School Board Vice President Gail Plant. CES fifth-graders Zirai Welch and Charleigh Gunn also went on the trip.
