ESY students thank the helpers in their school community
Colonial School District students spent part of their summer getting to know the helpers in their community as part of their Extended School Year (ESY) experience.
ESY concluded its five-week program at the end of July with a recognition ceremony for some of those helpers, honoring the security guards, food service employees, nurses, administrative assistants, transportation staff members, and the grounds crew and custodians who help Colonial School District run all year long.
Employees were treated to breakfast and then invited to Ridge Park Elementary School’s gym, where students presented hand-made cards and posters to representatives from each group. Some students also spoke on behalf of their classmates to thank the many individuals who keep them safe, beautify school grounds, feed them, and help them stay healthy.
In addition to learning about the caring people in their schools, the students learned throughout their five weeks about other professions that make the community a better place. Week one was devoted to healthcare workers like doctors, dentists, veterinarians, pharmacists and paramedics and featured a visit from Briar Bush Nature Center so students could learn about vets and animal rescue.
Week two provided students with insight into careers such as carpentry, plumbing, landscaping, construction and more. Students made tool mobiles and bird houses, dirt pudding, and enjoyed a touch-a-truck event with utility contractor, Danella. Week three focused on janitors, sanitation workers, postal carriers and truck drivers, and week four highlighted first responders such as firefighters and police.
Extended School Year is offered to students who qualify for individualized education programs due to disabilities every summer, and blends academics and activities to prepare students for the coming school year. Students practice motor and speech/language skills, socialize, and review academic concepts.
