Question of the Month - November
by Cameron Moore (6th)
Here is the question of the month for November: After the disappointing playoff loss, what do the Phillies do in the offseason?
First of all, what is on Dave Dombrowski’s wish list? First of all, they need a closer. Kimbrel was nice for one year, but his playoffs, especially the NLCS, was a moment to forget. There is also the possibility they need a first baseman, although that worry likely goes away if they get Hoskins back. They might also need starters, as Aaron Nola and Michael Lorenzen are entering free agency.
So, do they buy? In my opinion, I don’t think they go crazy, but they might get some players. Josh Hader is probably the best option, although he might be pricey. Plus, they already have a lefty in Alvarado.
The first baseman market is pretty solid this year, so the Phillies have many options. If they were to not get Hoskins, guys like Joey Gallo, Brandon Belt, or someone like that could be a good fill-in. However, this might mess up positioning due to Bryce Harper’s elbow, and it will be interesting to see how that develops this offseason.
And finally, who do they get rid of? Aaron Nola, Michael Lorenzen, Rhys Hoskins, and Craig Kimbrel are free agents this year. Kimbrel is definitely out. Lorenzen could be a back end bullpen guy, I’ll consider him a maybe. Hoskins and Nola are probably 50/50. They may return, they may not.
This could be the key to another successful 90-win season, possibly more. What do you think?
