Question of the Month - December

by Cameron Moore (6th)

If you’re a soccer fan, you’ll like December’s Question of the Month.

With the Philadelphia Union’s devastating playoff loss on November 25, they enter the offseason. In this offseason, there’s one question on their fans minds: Will Kai Wagner (VAG-nur) resign with the Union?

First of all, what money is he demanding? Well, his current contract is $630,000, which is up this year. The MLS’s max contract is $651,250, so it will be interesting to see what happens. Currently, Wagner or the Union has not made any demands public.

How valuable is he, though? Well, his current transfer market value is $5.4 million and while the Union have guys like Jakob Glesnes and Jack Elliott, as well as Andre Blake between the sticks, Wagner is the cornerstone of that defense and it would be far weaker without him, thus he is very valuable to the Union.

So, thanks to these reasons (plus many more), Philly’s chances of getting Wagner back are slim to none. As we get closer to the end of December, he could have a massive demand that will probably exceed the MLS salary tax.

But where does he go from here? In my opinion, Europe is probably the best option, as he could be a pivotal sub or even a starter somewhere in the soccer-rich continent. On October 20 of this year, Sky Sports Germany reported, "Wagner is very popular with Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion, among others,” which could mean a contract with a Premier League club.

So, what is actually going to happen with Kai Wagner? What do you think?
