The Major League Baseball season is underway at this point. However, I think it is important to reflect on another important baseball event from earlier this year: the World Baseball Classic.

This year’s addition of the World Baseball Classic is, likely, the best-performing version of the tournament in its history. This tournament had everything, from upsets and Cinderella runs to energy and fan environment. I’ll first recap you on everything that happened, as well as why it is important and why the future of this tournament is very promising.

Recap

This year’s World Baseball Classic had many memorable moments throughout. The tournament included incredible Cinderella runs from Italy and Venezuela, but at the expense of reigning champs Japan, who didn’t even make it to the semifinals.

In the semifinals, the United States, who had been at risk of being eliminated in the group stages, defeated the tournament favorite Dominican Republic. In the other semifinal, a clash between the Italian and Venezuelan Cinderellas, the latter defeated the Azzurri to face the United States in the final.

In the final, the American bats went cold and Venezuela won its first WBC title ever, capping off a spectacular Cinderella run.

Importance

This tournament, in my opinion, may have been one of the most important baseball events ever.

First of all, there was tons of parody. The US, Japan, and Dominican Republic did not dominate this tournament. The US fell just short, but had multiple close calls throughout the tournament. The Dominican Republic missed the final altogether, and Japan didn’t even make it past the first round of the knockout stage. On the other hand, Venezuela won it all and Italy made the semi finals. The tournament was filled with chaos, and you never knew what would happen.

Also, many of the USA’s stars participated for the first time, creating a stacked superteam of some of the best players on the planet. Not everyone hopped on the WBC train, but it is a huge advancement forward for the future of the tournament.

Future of the Tournament

Generally, I think that the World Baseball Classic has a very bright future in the United States and the rest of the world alike.

In the US, the championship game averaged 10.78 million viewers on the FOX family of networks, shattering records. This makes it the most viewed WBC game, in the US, in history. Following Bryce Harper’s game-tying home run in the bottom of the 8th inning of the championship, viewership peaked at 12.15 million viewers, according to FOX Sports. The company also reported that compared to the 2023 final between the US and Japan, which at that time smashed US viewership records, the 2026 final saw a 128% increase in viewership.

To put in perspective just how crazy these numbers are, primetime coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics (in the US) averaged 10.13 million viewers and the 2025 World Series averaged 10.8 million. It was also the most viewed Tuesday night broadcast on the FOX TV network since that aforementioned World Series.

It wasn’t just the final, though. FOX Sports reported that an average of 1.29 million viewers watched the tournament across FOX, FS1, and FS2, a gargantuan 156% increase from 2023. This made this winter’s WBC the most watched classic ever on English-speaking broadcasts.

But, it’s not just in the US. Netflix Japan, who acquired the rights to broadcast the WBC in the Land of the Rising Sun, reported that it was their most watched program ever in the country. In Europe, and particularly in Italy, viewership records were also shattered, aided by Italy’s magical run.

The tournament was also filled with plenty of in-person viewers. Attendance jumped from 1.31 million in 2023 to 1.62 million in 2026, a 24% increase.

One thing that truly stands out to me is that these numbers are shattering records from 2023, records that many considered unfathomable at the time. Maybe we will look back the next time around and realize that it was just a matter of time until these numbers fall. Only time will tell.

So, that does it for my mega recap of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, and what made it so special. It isn’t just the games. It’s the atmosphere, the vibes, the passion, and the loyalty and patriotism. It’s the same feeling that I get watching an Olympic Games, honestly. Just sitting on your couch watching your team represent your country. No matter what may be going on at home, in your city, or the entire country as a whole, you are proud to be a supporter of your country, whether it be the US, or wherever else you or your family is from.

People, including myself, always joke about how the Olympics install a two-week phase of extreme patriotism in society. Now, I think this tournament is finally starting to have that same effect on our society. I think that is what makes this tournament truly special.
