One year ago, If someone told me that I would be stranded in the forest because of a plane crash, I would have laughed in their face.
Because that’s just crazy. I've read about stuff happening like that in books and movies, but I never thought that would happen to me. Until now. I take a look around. The whole place is wrecked. The plane crash wiped out just about everything. How could we feed such a big group of people? Where could we get food?
Nearby, another girl about my age is walking by. She looks like she’s asking herself these same questions. “Hi.” I say as she walks by. She turns around and smiles.
“Hi. My name is Tessa.” she says.
“Beatrice.” I respond. “But everyone calls me Bea.”
“BEA!” The earsplitting cry is from my grandmother, who is growing more and more impatient. I sigh.
“Well, see you later, I guess." Tessa says.
“Yeah” I mumble. Gramma stomps over to me as Tessa flees, probably scared because of how mad Gramma is.
“BEA!” She fumes. “Can you BELIEVE that the all you can eat buffet is CLOSED!?” Cue massive eyeroll. Gramma is barely acknowledging that were stranded, she just cares that she has a “rumbly in her tummy” as she likes to say. “I’m also THIRSTY, Bumble Bea!” Gramma is still complaining. “I asked the pilot for a water bottle, and he told me that they were all being conserved for when we really need ‘em. But man, I need that water like a chicken needs window paint!”
I sigh. “He’s right, Gramma. We can’t drink all the water today.”
She’s still fuming. “You don’t understand-”
“No, YOU don’t understand, Gramma! I want the water as much as anyone else. I’m terrified of not knowing what will happen to us, and I just took the extra responsibility of helping-” I’m quiet. Then a huge smile creeps across my face. “Thanks Gramma, you're the best!” I say as I run away.
A confused Gramma says, “Now what the animatronic cell phone is going on?” I race to the plane and come to the pilot. “Hey!” I say. “Could I still bring an extra friend to work on this with me?” The pilot grins from ear to ear.
“Of course! I need all the help I can get!” I sprint out of the plane and look around. I run to Tessa and say,
“Hi! I was wondering, do you want to help me try to fix the plane? We want to get the communicator working.” Tessa smiles, and I can tell she likes computers as much as I do.
“Of COURSE I'll help!” I grin. “She frowns. “But how? It’s not like we can just flip a switch and get the plane up and running. We can’t take too much time. Time is the one thing we don’t have.” She looks around, and I can tell what she’s thinking. She knows that it’s only a matter of time before we run out of resources for everyone. I can’t help feeling a pang of sadness. But it doesn't last. I stand up straight.
“That’s why we need to get it up and running. We don’t know how much time we have left!” she nods.
“Let's do this.”
