Teddy Bahnck, 7th Grade

From an overthinking teenager to a worldwide recognized activist, Greta Thunberg does not fear speaking up for what is right for our planet. What started in 2018 as a one person strike against the lack of action taken against climate change turned into a worldwide protest for her skolstrejk för klimatet (school strike for climate).

Early Life

At eight years old, Greta Thunberg had learned about how our planet is slowly dying due to mass pollution, usage of fossil fuels, and excessive discharge of gas into the atmosphere. Because livestock and airplanes release so much gases that contribute to global warming, she immediately decided to drop both of those from her life. Greta became a vegan and refused to travel by air.

Unfortunately, her efforts didn’t change much. Due to the heavy lack of action taken towards reversing our effects on climate change, she fell into a deep depression, scarcely speaking or eating. Soon after this, Greta was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. People who have Asperger syndrome often have the tendency to focus on one idea, which explains Greta’s sudden alertness after learning about global warming.

Skolstrejk för Klimatet

Frustrated at how little effort lawmakers put into reversing the problem, Greta decided to sit herself outside of the Swedish parliament for three weeks in 2018, regardless of missing school. This was later founded as Fridays for Future.

Though she was alone at first, many people began to support her, even from all around the world. This sparked her fame. Greta was recognized for being one of the first climate activists, and she most likely is a reason why we try our best to be aware of our impact on the planet.

Why is Greta Thunberg so Important?

Greta Thunberg shows how no matter how old you are or what you’re standing for, you should stick up for yourself, those around you, and your beliefs. Even if you don’t agree with some of her claims, she still resembles how you should be outspoken and make sure your voice is heard. She has inspired many just for being encouraged and spreading her word. She is truly a role model for simply standing up for what you believe is right and staying true to yourself.
