8th Grade English Teacher Mr. Hewitt

Today I am here with 8th grade blue team ELA teacher Mr. Hewitt, one of the many new teachers here at Colonial Middle School.

How do you like it here at CMS?

So far, I love it. Some of my favorite things here are my coworkers and students.

Why did you want to teach ELA?

I wanted to teach ELA because my English teacher during my sophomore year of college was amazing, and she kind of pulled me into being an English teacher.

What is your favorite part about teaching middle school?

My favorite part of teaching middle school and 8th grade is watching all of my students start to become themselves, find their true identity, and I think it’s cool to be able to help students throughout that process.

What is your favorite book?

My favorite book is called The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. One of the reasons I love this book is because it was one of the first long books I read, about 500 pages. So, it gave me lots of confidence about my reading going into high school. It’s about a boy who is 14 years old. He grew up with a foster family and it details his journey through life and the challenges he faced. He had a tough life but he still stayed optimistic and positive.

When did you decide that you wanted to teach?

I knew I wanted to be a teacher in early high school because I wanted to enjoy what I did, in terms of work, and I wanted to have a positive impact on kids’ lives.

If you could teach another subject, what would it be and why?

In college, I chose between ELA and history, but now I would want to teach an encore because it would be really cool to meet everybody in the school, not just the 8th grade blue team.

Is there anything else you would like to say?

I’m happy to be here, and I’m excited to become a part of the community, because I just want to immerse myself in the school culture.

And that is Mr. Hewitt, CMS’s newest 8th grade ELA teacher. Thank you to Mr. Hewitt for allowing me to come and talk to him. He has truly been a great addition to our CMS community.
