Welcome to the second-ever article of WUT? (Why U Think), the biweekly fun fact database, where we answer the question: why do you ever need to think when you have fun facts? Let’s get into it!
A Cloud Weighs About a Million Tons
Most clouds have a volume of 1 km³ and an estimated density of 1.003 kg per m³ — about 0.4% lower than the surrounding air, which is why they float! If you go through all the math, it shows that clouds weigh about a million tons. Sadly, no, a cloud’s weight does not mean they can carry the weight of a human — meaning those dreams you have of frolicking in clouds will just have to remain dreams.
Your Brain Is Constantly Eating Itself
We often imagine our brain as an unchanging structure, but recent studies show that's not true! Studies reveal that your brain is constantly changing its microstructure — technically by “eating itself.” This process is called phagocytosis, which means eating things both outside and inside the cell. Not all forms of brain phagocytosis are deadly, but in rare cases, such as when healthy neurons are targeted instead of debris, medical assistance may be needed.
Identical Twins Don’t Have the Same Fingerprints
Even though they are identical, all identical twins have different and unique fingerprints. This happens because of environmental factors that affect each twin inside the womb. It is impossible for twins to have the exact same fingerprints, no matter how identical they seem!
Giraffes Are 30 Times More Likely to Be Struck by Lightning
Even though mankind often wishes to be taller, there may be benefits to our shortness — like reducing the chance of being struck by pure voltage raining down from the sky. A real-world example: giraffe populations, where individuals are 30 times more likely to be struck by lightning!
Facts Clarissa Didn’t Know: Cantaloupes Are Part of the Melon Family
In case you didn't know (Clarissa, pay attention): cantaloupes — or Cucumis melo var. cantalupensis scientifically — are distinctly sweet, orange-fleshed fruits known for their aromatic flavor. What Clarissa didn't know, however, is that cantaloupes are considered part of the melon family... the most basic fact about the fruit. Good job, Clarissa. Good job.
All right, that's everything! See you next time!
P.S.: This might have to become a monthly article at the rate we’re going, lol.
